What Is Bone Char?

Granular bone char is usually sold in bags, whereas powdered bone char is sold loose. Both types of bone char work well for removing impurities from water.
However, if you’re using bone char to treat drinking water, you should only use granular bone char. Powdered bone char is not recommended for treating drinking water.
Granular bone char works great for filtering out sediment and dirt from tap water. It does a great job of removing chlorine and chloramine from water. It doesn’t work very well for removing heavy metals like lead and mercury.
Powder bone char is sold loose and comes in small containers. Powdered bone char may contain toxic substances that can cause skin irritation.
Why Is Bone Char Used In Sugar?

Types Of Sugar That Are Not Vegan

Brown rice syrup is similar to honey in color and consistency. However, unlike honey, it doesn’t contain any pollen.
Agave Syrup – Agave syrup is made from agaves. Agaves are cactus-like plants that grow naturally in Mexico and parts of South America.
Agave syrup is sweeter than regular table sugar syrup. It’s commonly used in baking, cooking, and making teas.
Maple Syrup – Maple syrup is made from maple trees. Maple trees grow naturally in North America. Maple syrup is very versatile.
It can be used in raw sugar alternatives in recipes, added to coffee, tea, hot chocolate, pancakes, waffles, muffins, granola bars, yogurt, salad dressing, marinades, soups, sauces, gravies, dips, spreads, glazes, frostings, icings, etc.
However, the number of vegans and those who care about this sort of stuff hasn’t grown to the point where the sugar company will be persuaded to change.
Is Bone Char Used In Brown Sugar?
Bone char is used in white sugar production. It helps remove impurities and gives the sugar its whiteness. However, bone char isn’t necessary if you’re using brown sugar instead of white sugar. You can simply skip adding bone char to your recipe.
Brown sugar is made from raw cane juice. It’s not refined like white sugar, so there are no additives added during processing. As a result, brown sugar doesn’t require any additional ingredients to achieve its desired color.
Because bone char decolorizes sugarcane to produce the desired white sugar, sugar manufacturers utilize it in the processing and refining of sugar.
Is Powdered Sugar Vegan?
Powdered sugar is made from refined white sugar, which means it’s not vegan. However, there are several types of powdered sugar beets available today that are made using alternative ingredients.
These include coconut sugar, brown rice syrup, maple syrup, molasses, agave nectar, honey, barley malt, sorghum, tapioca starch, arrowroot powder, cornstarch, potato flour, and xanthan gum. Some of these alternatives may be suitable for vegans, depending on your personal dietary preferences.
For example, if you prefer to avoid refined sugars, then you might consider using coconut sugar instead of regular white sugar. Coconut sugar is a source for health reasons derived from the sap of palm trees, making it a healthier option than white sugar. You can find coconut sugar crystals at most grocery stores, health food stores, and online retailers.
What Are Some Vegan Sugar Brands?
There are tons of vegan sugar brands available today. You may not realize it, but there are actually two types of vegan sugar products: natural sources of sugar and artificial sweeteners.
Natural sugars are derived from plants, whereas artificial sweeteners are made synthetically. Both types of vegan sugar industry products are great options for vegans and vegetarians.
